Microfiber can be considered a "green" fiber, as it ismade from petroleum waste products - essentially, the microfiber emerged as a way to take something that was useless and turn it into a product for everyone.

After much experimentation, polypropylene was used to develop an extremely fine fiber. This fiber was referred to as "microfiber", an extremely thin but surprisingly resilient fiber that could be used for a number of applications.
